How Ranbir Kapoor Changed Into Munna Bhai for ‘Sanju’

There is no doubt that Ranbir Kapoor has done an absolutely brilliant job of playing role of Sanjay Dutt in Sanju film. He completely shed his own identity and stopped at this character, inhabited that of the character, imbibing even the tiniest of mannerisms.
But how did he become Manna Bhai?

“Playing in Sanju is one thing, playing in Munna Bhai is something else. He [Ranbir] had to understand how Munna Bhai walked and talked and he spoked to circuit, as he said, how he was scared of his father in this film. He also had to practice how Sanju played Munna Bhai. – Rajkumar Hirani, writer and director.

This was to be an even more difficult task. Not only that Ranbir should embody the character of Sanjay Dutt, but he also needs to take a step forward and describe how Dutt performs Munna Bhai.

“Because I played in Munna Bhai, I knew that I could not break it, you know, because it’s such a big baggage.” So I kept asking Raju how Sir Sanju came up. since I must have seen Munna Bhai: I have lost count myself. – Ranbir Kapoor said”.

Rannbir says that he likes to play Munna Bhai role and that he is “quite crazy” and “surreal” as an experience.

“I do not think I could ever create a symbolic character in my career (like Munna Bhai), but it’s great to have a small part that I can emulate” – Ranbir Kapoor.

On the other hand, Rajkumar Hirani says that this is a “very nostalgic journey”, which revises and restores the scenes he shot ten years ago.

The director-actor duo reflect on the tedious and complex process of transforming Ranbir into Munna Bhai and explains that the task was twofold. First of all, they had to take a right look, which Ranbir says he had taken about 13 test tests, after which he lost the count.
